Es fácil ver que el árbol torcido
intentaba alcanzar la luz.
«¡Claro!», dices.
Es muy obvio.
No llamas al árbol
abominable o disfuncional
por eso.
Tal vez un huracán
lo derribó a medias
y tuvo que torcer sus ramas hacia arriba
para llegar al sol.
Tal vez una plaga de insectos
taladró sus raíces,
y tuvo que luchar
rezumando una resina apestosa.
Tal vez llovió por tanto tiempo
que el suelo a su alrededor
se convirtió en un pantano,
y el árbol tuvo que aprender
a vivir en aguas fétidas.
No juzgarías al árbol
llamándolo un pervertido torcido,
un alma infestada,
un corazón podrido.
¡Por supuesto que no!
Probablemente te preguntarías
qué le pasó…
Y, si conocieras la historia del árbol,
probablemente se ablandaría tu corazón.
Tal vez dirías,
«pobre alma…»,
no con lástima,
sino con admiración.
«Cómo es que,
después de tanto sufrimiento y lucha,
el árbol sigue vivo,
esforzándose por convertirse
en algo hermoso».

It’s easy to see the twisted tree
was reaching for light.
“Of course!,” you say.
It’s so obvious.
You don’t call the tree
abhorrent or dysfunctional
because of that.
Maybe a hurricane
knocked it halfway down
and it had to twist its branches upward
to reach toward the sun.
Maybe an infestation of insects
drilled its roots
and it had to fight back
by oozing a stinky resin.
Maybe it rained for so long
the soil around the tree became a swamp,
and the tree had to learn
to live in fetid waters.
You wouldn’t judge the tree
by calling it a twisted pervert
an infested soul,
a putrid heart.
Of course not!
You’d probably wonder
what happened to it…
And if you learned the tree’s story,
it would probably soften your heart.
Maybe you’d say,
“poor soul…”
not with pity
but with admiration.
“How come
after all this suffering and strive,
the tree is still alive
and striving to become
beautiful.”
